I forgot one thing before.

When we arrived in Siliguri, we didn't go straight on.

No, when we arrived in Siliguri, a man took us there and told us, "The contractor will come, and we'll bring you train fare."

But the contractor didn't come, and he didn't bring the money. So we were broke.

then we really suffered — from hunger.

We stayed hungry for seven days in Siliguri.

From there after seven days we went on to a goat pasture.

We went over there after staying hungry for seven or eight days, and there they gave us some food. We stayed there about two days.

Then we went up to a place called Goat River and worked.

We cut bamboo.

They were giving us about fifty rupees per hundred — it was like a daily contract — and we worked there for about a month.

We worked, and later —

After we'd worked, the contractors pocketed the money.

They pocketed it. They didn't come from Assam, and then later we worked and they didn't give us rice either.

They didn't give us the money for our work either.

So what we did was, we went up to a village.

Up in the village — we couldn't get rice down below, and the contractors didn't send any.

So we brought down some manioc.

We brought down 5 maunds of manioc and we went on working eating manioc.

But that manioc wasn't good for us.

I was poisoned — we were poisoned by the manioc.

We were poisoned and we vomited and defecated as soon as we ate it.

That was no good so we went to the jungle and dug up some wild yams.

We dug up wild yams and brought them back and ate them.

But that was no good either.

Then later — suddenly the contractor came from over there [in Assam].

He came and took us and paid our wages.

And we went back to Siliguri.
