Long ago, Damar Dhoj (important subba of Libang, d. 1952) had a nephew.

Now this Uttarhang lost both his father and his mother, and he went and stayed at his maternal uncle's place

up at Lingkhim in the Tamur Valley.

Up there he looked after the buffalo and the cattle.

He stayed there and they arranged a marriage for him, and then three years later he fell off the Thumma bridge and died.

Et c'est comme ça qu'on l'a marié. Et trois ans plus tard, il s'est tué en tombant du pont de Thumma.

When he died, his maternal uncles and aunts discussed

They sat and discussed it.

They sent a man who lived up in Lingkhim, and he came down.

When he came down to Libang, he said,

a nephew of yours up there — he fell off a bridge and died.

He went under the water and died," he said, bringing down the news.

When he brought the news, (everyone said:) "Well, he fell to his death, so now what needs to be done?

Quand il leur a annoncé la nouvelle [ils ont dit] : "Bon, puisqu'il est mort d'une chute, qu'est-ce qu'il faut faire, maintenant ?

If a man becomes ill and dies, it is handled straightforwardly.

Si quelqu'un meurt de maladie, c'est tout simple.

But for a man who falls to his death, a yeba (shaman) is needed.

Mais si quelqu'un meurt d'une chute, alors là, il faut un yeba [chamane spécialisé].

A shaman has to perform the ritual.

C'est un yeba qui doit accomplir le rituel.

It can only be put right by the ritual, the funeral of one who dies in a fall," they said.

Ce n'est que par le rituel que les choses peuvent rentrer dans l'ordre dans le cas de quelqu'un qui meurt d'une chute.

Then they said, "Let's go!", and off they went.

Allons-y!" ont-ils dit. Et ils se sont mis en route.

The paternal uncles and the cousins all went up to Lingkhim.

Les oncles et les cousins paternels, tous sont montés à Lingkhim.

"How did it happen?" they asked.

"Comment est-il mort ? ont-ils demandé.

"It was on a bridge. He had drunk a little beer. He'd had enough beer.

It was raining continuously and two or three of us had already crossed and gone ahead to the other side.

While we were standing over there, he came along behind and he slipped in the middle of the bridge and was killed," they said.

Pendant qu'on attendait, lui, il arrivait derrière, et au milieu du pont, il a glissé et il s'est tué", ont-ils dit.

They spoke, and then they went [to the scene].

Ils sont allés sur place.

They looked for the body in the water, but they did not find it.

Ils ont cherché le corps dans l'eau, mais ne l'ont pas trouvé.

So they went back up saying, "Now we have to get a shaman," and they looked for shamans.

Alors ils sont remontés : "Maintenant, il faut faire venir un yeba." Et ils ont commencé à chercher des yeba.

Now down in the place called Khebheng there were two shamans living together, a shaman and a female shaman.

Or, plus bas, dans un village qui s'appelle Khebheng vivait un couple de yeba.

"Good, we should bring them up here," they said, and they consulted them.

"Voilà, il faut les faire monter ici."

When they consulted them, the Khebheng shaman couple said "There are shamans who know better than we do.

Quand on leur a demandé conseil, les deux yeba de Khebheng ont dit : "Il y a des yeba qui savent mieux que nous.

Only if they kill it (i.e. the ghost) it will die.

Et c'est seulement si eux le tuent [c.-à-d. tuent l'esprit du mort] qu'il sera mort.

When did it die?" they asked.

Quand est-ce qu'il est mort ?

"If he died only yesterday or the day before, we two can kill it.

Si c'est seulement hier ou avant-hier, nous deux, on peut le tuer.

But if it was long ago, and it has reached five or six years of age, then we two cannot kill it," they said.

Mais si c'est il y a longtemps et que le mort a déjà cinq ou six mois, nous ne pourrons pas le tuer.

"One that died long ago — its hair grows up to one cubit long.

It can't be killed," they said.

Then they took counsel. They took counsel.

Et ils discutent. Ils tiennent conseil.
